Our volunteer academic coaches provide a mentoring relationship and academic support to Asheville City Schools’ students in an after-school setting at one of our partner sites: Delta House, Youthful Hand or the YWCA. This program focuses on middle school age students. Our coaches communicate with school personnel and the site Coordinator to assist students in meeting goals and learning to advocate for themselves. Volunteer Academic Coaches commit to working with the student at least one hour per week for the school year. Meetings will take place at the partnering program location.
Prior to be matched with a student, volunteers will complete a Volunteer Academic Coach Registration form and be screened and interviewed. Volunteers receive an orientation and training before beginning their coaching, and there are several additional training and networking opportunities available throughout the year. An online forum is also provided to encourage discussions about best practices and to share valuable resources and ideas. Our volunteer Academic Coaches are part of a dedicated, supportive community of volunteers who provide and invaluable service to our students and our community.
